Do I qualify for semaglutide?
Your health history matters. Learn the starting criteria for treatment and how your Medi-Weightloss provider can help you understand your options.
The starting criteria
For adults considering compounded semaglutide or Wegovy® for weight management
BMI
30+
A BMI of 30 or higher.
BMI
27+
A BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.
These criteria are a starting point. Your provider determines whether treatment is appropriate for you.
Your eligibility starts with more than a number.
BMI uses your height and weight as a screening measure. Your provider also considers your medical history, current medications, and weight loss goals before recommending treatment.
You don’t need to have diabetes.
Wegovy and compounded semaglutide are approved for weight management in eligible patients with or without diabetes.
You don’t need to have every answer.
Your local Medi team can explain your options and help you decide on a next step.

Is semaglutide right for everyone?
No. Some health conditions and medications can affect whether it’s appropriate for you. Share your full health history with your provider.
Semaglutide may not be right for you if you have:
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, a specific type of thyroid cancer.
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or MEN2.
- A previous serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or its ingredients.
Wegovy carries a boxed warning about thyroid tumors observed in rodents. It is unknown whether it causes these tumors in humans.
Pregnant or planning a pregnancy? Semaglutide should not be used for weight loss during pregnancy. Stop it at least two months before a planned pregnancy, with guidance from your provider.
Tell your provider about breastfeeding, pancreas or gallbladder problems, kidney conditions, diabetic eye disease, severe stomach-emptying problems, and all medications you take.
What else should I know?
Does qualifying mean insurance will cover it?
Medical eligibility and insurance coverage are separate. Coverage depends on your plan, and additional requirements may apply. Confirm your benefits and expected costs before starting treatment.
What if I only want to lose 20–30 pounds?
The amount you want to lose does not determine eligibility on its own. Your provider will consider your BMI, health history, and goals to help identify appropriate options.
Does meeting the BMI criteria guarantee a prescription?
No. Your provider must evaluate the potential benefits and risks, including your health conditions and current medications, before prescribing treatment.
