Let’s face it, in 2019 almost everyone has a smartphone or smart home device. We walk into our living rooms yelling “Alexa” or “Hey, Google” hoping to turn the lights and TV on without having to move a muscle. But what if Alexa did more for us when it came to being healthy? Wouldn’t it be extraordinary if we could use that same level of convenience and ease to say, set up a workout? Perhaps we would be more inclined to take a minute for our workout if Alexa made it as easy as “Alexa, play my 5-minute cardio workout.”

Funny enough, it is that easy! There are tons of resources that Alexa, Siri, or Google can access. In fact, Alexa has over 30,000 skills available. Say you wanted to stretch for a bit in the morning. All you need to do is get a mat on the floor, bring along a water bottle because hydration, hydration, hydration, and say “Alexa, start 6-Minute Full Body Stretch.” Alexa, using the free Full Body Stretch skill, will walk you through stretching all six muscle groups while playing some relaxing background music for that added wellness touch. Now your stretching possibilities are endless!  Want to know more about Coach Alexa? Get this, you can tell her each time you exercise, how long you worked out, and to what intensity. She will keep a progress report going for you! You can even review your stats on the Alexa app and earn points for meeting your weekly goals she sets for you! Make sure to listen up for her starting whistle!

Want to hear about the softer side of Alexa? The skill My Gym Angel allows her to find the right words when you are looking for some much needed motivation. Using Instagram or Pinterest as her resource, Alexa will help you find the strength when your 5:30 a.m. workout alarm goes off. “You can do it!” –Alexa. What’s that? You need music also?  No problem, just tell Alexa to use the Get Motivated skill and she will read motivational quotes and then play some upbeat and motivating music. Talk about give me a beat!

Alexa is even interested in teaching you about your nutrition. Ever wondered how many calories are in that flax seed English muffin topped with avocado mousse? We certainly do. Alexa can use the New Tree skill to tell you the full nutrition information of your food, and yes, that includes a breakdown of carbs, fat, and cholesterol. We can hear it now, “Alexa, tell me about the honey salmon I just ate.”

The great news is, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of skills for you to install and use at your convenience to help keep you motivated when motivation seems scarce. Do your research and get to downloading your skills, Alexa is waiting to hop on the health and wellness train with you!
