Focus on Healthy Living this Summer

The first day of summer is quickly approaching. Now’s the perfect time to focus on you. Here are a few tips to help you stay active and healthy this summer:

Fuel Up in the Morning

Starting your day right is all about making the right food choices. Stay away from empty calories like danishes, doughnuts, and muffins that will only spike your sugar, putting you in danger of crashing midmorning. Make breakfast count and stick to fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Enjoy the Rainbow

If you have kids, you are probably familiar with the song, “all the colors of the rainbow -— red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.” This is a great song to not only teach children their colors, but also to teach us all how to eat. We should aspire to eat the rainbow because it will help ensure that we consume a variety of nutrients. Make sure to choose fruits and vegetables that are in season.

Get Moving

Regular exercise is key to weight loss and weight maintenance efforts. Summer is the perfect time to dive in to exercise. Swimming increases muscle tone, so you can have fun and get fit! Don’t like the pool? Hit the beach. There is nothing quite like playing an intense game of beach volleyball then cooling off in the waves. Just remember, while soaking up the sun, skin protection is paramount—slather on the SPF!

Stay Hydrated

With temperatures rising, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Don’t wait until thirst sets in to start drinking water. Most people are already on the road to dehydration before they even feel thirsty. Drink at least 64 oz of water daily and even more if you are participating in outdoor activities.
