Many people suffer from poor body image and low self-esteem, especially women. The media plays a large role in how people view themselves and whether they think they’re beautiful. The fact of the matter is that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.

According to WebMD, many women have a poor body image and are looking for ways to improve what they see in the mirror. This is not only damaging to self-esteem, but a counterproductive way to live.

"Research suggests that in general, women have slightly lower self-esteem overall when compared to men. But when it comes to body image, there is an enormous gender gap, with women reporting an overwhelmingly greater body dissatisfaction when compared to men," said Denise Martz, a clinical health psychologist and professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

Models and celebrities are known for their slender builds and the notion that this is the ideal body type has propelled many women and men into unhealthy weight loss regimens and eating disorders. A study conducted by Harvard researchers in 2003 found that the rate of anorexia and bulimia in Fiji skyrocketed once the country gained access to cable in 1995.

Instead of turning to Hollywood for your body image ideas, WebMD recommends learning to love yourself, perceived flaws and all. Thinking positively is the first step toward a better body image. Don’t put yourself down. Instead, focus on the things you like about yourself, whether it's your white teeth, beautiful hair or long legs.

You also should show yourself the same kindness that you show loved ones. Learning to appreciate yourself can do wonders for your body image and confidence.

As you rebuild your self-esteem, remember to dress the part. Hiding yourself in clothes that are too big or stuffing yourself into clothing that is too small won’t make you look or feel good. Remember, only 2 percent of the world fits into the supermodel category and beautiful women come in all sizes. Accentuate what you like about your body and camouflage what you don’t. Looking good will surely improve your body esteem.
